“We need to talk,” but the conversation must defuse the conflict, not replay it.
In a conflict, each person brings their version and wants it to win. As long as the conversation looks for someone to blame, it turns bitter. This module guides you step by step: set ground rules before tackling the issue, listen to the other person’s anger without taking it personally, be sincere, and end on solutions rather than the past.
What you’ll take away
- the three ground rules to state aloud before raising a difficult topic
- the habit of letting anger pass, then naming what the other person feels
- a way to end on putting things right and next steps, rather than on blame
Who it’s for
Anyone who wants to see a disagreement through to agreement, and managers who want to resolve tensions in their team.
Learning objectives
- Set three explicit ground rules: protect the relationship, ban verbal abuse, and see the discussion through until you reach an agreement.
- Let the other person express their anger without defending yourself or taking their accusations personally.
- Name the other person’s emotion to lower the tension, without judging it or taking responsibility for what they feel.
- Open up in turn: share how you feel, then guide the discussion to an agreement on putting things right and next steps.
