Saying no at work: When and how

AI visual

Saying no isn’t slamming a door: it’s opening another path.

What you tolerate today becomes tomorrow’s habit: nitpicking supervision, a hurtful tone, one urgent request too many. This module teaches you to say no without making anyone defensive (time to understand the request, an alternative to offer) and to stand firm, calmly, even when someone insists.

~20 min at your own paceKey skill: Assertiveness and Self-AffirmationAvailable in FR + ENNo prerequisites

What you’ll take away

  • a radar for spotting when a boundary protects the team as much as it protects you
  • a range of ways to say no and protect relationships: time to think, a condition, a counteroffer
  • the ready answer for when someone keeps insisting: same words, same calm

Who it’s for

Anyone who wants their yes to mean something, knowing they can also say no.

Learning objectives

  1. Identify what stops you from saying no (fears, fatalism, passive resistance) and the cost of forced yeses.
  2. Spot the five dysfunctions to refuse: micromanagement, disrespect, being treated like a child, constant overload, and resistance to new methods.
  3. Respond in three steps (rephrase, question how urgent the request really is, and only then answer) to defuse excessive requests.
  4. Choose how to say no (“and at the same time,” time to think, a condition, a counteroffer) and repeat it without justifying yourself.
